Artificial intelligence (AI) has seen massive growth and advancement over the past decade. Technologies like machine learning and neural networks have enabled AI systems to match or even surpass human performance on certain narrow tasks.
Be it playing complex games like Go and Starcraft, generating art and music, or automating customer service – today’s AI can be extremely capable when narrowly focused.
However, despite all the hype and excitement around AI, the truth is we are still far from creating truly intelligent systems that can understand, reason, and learn like humans can. True deep learning remains elusive. Current AI operates very differently from human intelligence.
Deep learning is a subfield of machine learning where artificial neural networks can automatically extract complex patterns from large datasets. The “deep” refers to the multiple layers within these neural nets that enable learning abstract concepts.
Deep learning has driven much of the recent progress in fields like computer vision, speech recognition, and natural language processing. Applications like machine translation, facial recognition, and autonomous driving rely on deep neural networks.
However, deep learning alone has significant limitations. While today’s AI can match or exceed human performance on narrow tasks, these systems lack the general, flexible intelligence humans possess.
For example, an AI trained to play the game Go cannot then understand a story or make a medical diagnosis. It has mastered Go but nothing else.
A system that translates between languages does not then gain the ability to recognize animals. Their learning is narrow, specialized, and inflexible.
True deep learning requires broader cognitive abilities.
It means AI systems that can transfer learning across domains, make inferential connections, understand context, adapt to change, and reason about the world generally.
