- The Power of Universal Knowledge
Not too long after ChatGPT burst onto everyone’s newsfeed, I found myself in a conversation where a majority of comments expressed fear and doubt about this technology. However, my perspective was starkly different.
Before generative AI became widely accessible, the AI that most impacted my daily life was the recommendation system, or the ‘you may also like’ pop-up on social media. If you’ve watched The Social Dilemma on Netflix, you’ll see how social media can trap you in a feedback loop, reinforcing the beliefs you already hold and filtering out any content that might disrupt your ‘engagement’. This unfortunate reality is true, and many of my clients, who are advanced data scientists working in financial services, have switched to big tech companies to work on these very algorithms. These algorithms aim to create a tailored user experience, boosting the conversion rate of online advertising, while simultaneously fostering isolated and exclusive mindsets.
In contrast, ChatGPT was developed by processing an enormous amount of information and can deliver a wide breadth of knowledge to users through simple prompts. Granted, the information it has learned from is not perfect, and it can’t always provide the correct answer. However, compared to an individual with limited time and access to books and the internet, ChatGPT is capable of acquiring a more universal knowledge than any single human being could. As a result, when I interact with ChatGPT, instead of only being exposed to ideas I’m predisposed to accept, I gain insights from unique angles that sometimes challenge my own beliefs, helping me develop a more inclusive mindset.
- Communication Without Borders
Since I started using ChatGPT, I’ve noticed significant improvement in my English proficiency. While I can speak English fluently, it is after all my second language. I’ve never had an English teacher who could correct every single sentence I spoke without making me feel offended or frustrated, but ChatGPT has made that possible. As they use their vast knowledge to correct my grammar mistakes, I’m also unconsciously learning how to craft better narratives from the outset. They’ve essentially eliminated the language barrier for me, giving me the freedom to translate my thoughts into words more confidently.
Additionally, with the aid of ChatGPT, I’m finally beginning to understand some puns rich in cultural references that previously eluded me due to lack of exposure. It’s always been an awkward moment when everyone around me would laugh at a joke and I’d miss the punchline, too shy to ask for an explanation. With ChatGPT, I can simply ask why people laugh when someone says ‘They call me Arsenal, I start on top and finish 2nd!’. ChatGPT then tells me the story behind this joke. This significantly helped me feel more included in social conversations.
Earlier iterations of language models primarily focused on translation, a tradition that large language models, like ChatGPT, continue to uphold. They’re incredibly good at translating languages. An inclusive society cannot truly exist if its people cannot communicate effectively with one another, and I believe that language models will play an increasingly vital role in this, given their continually evolving capabilities.
