Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) have been developing since the 1950s when computer scientist Alan Turing proposed the concept of a machine that could mimic human intelligence. Decades away, computers could store more information and became faster, cheaper, and more accessible. AI and ML are increasingly advancing their computational power and big data processing to become a machine that surpasses human cognitive abilities in all tasks.
On November 30th, 2022, Chat GPT was launched by Open AI and immediately gained a wave of attention, with 1 million downloads in just a week. The current ChatGPT is GPT version 3 with enormous capabilities to generate human-like text. It is now a direct competitor to content creators, journalists, administrative workers, and jobs in service fields. While we are still in the hype on GPT-3, it is already a rumor that the fourth version of GPT (GPT-4) is in progress development and will be released in 2023, where the capability of this version is a quantum leap on what current ChatGPT can do.
Even with current capabilities, ChatGPT has become a treasure for engineers and entrepreneurs, but also it has become a real direct threat to many professions for displacement. Jump to the next 10–20 years, AI is expected to provide increased efficiency and automation in various fields, not only in the technology-related sector but also in healthcare, transportation, manufacturing, services, and finance.
Developing the skills required in the future is important to prepare for the era of artificial intelligence and machine learning. Additionally, it’s important to stay informed about the latest development in AI and ML and be prepared to adapt to the changes they bring. The following are the skills necessary in the era of AI and ML, 2030 and beyond;
Now all information and access to the digital platform are within reach of fingertips. Digital literacy is the skill of learning, selecting, and using tools to find, evaluate, use, and create information in a productive and useful way. With familiarity with these skills, we could do independent research, efficiently create digital content and products, and easily collaborate with individuals and teams using a digital platform.
These skills enable individuals and organizations to make informed decisions by uncovering insights from data, identifying patterns and trends, and evaluating different options, which are essential for a wide range of industries and job roles, including business analysis, data science, marketing, and finance. These skills also play a crucial role in the development of new products and services, as well as the optimization of existing ones.
According to Prof Dr. Ingrid Schoon, Human Development and Social Policy — The Institute of the Education University of London. In her research, she found the importance of socio-emotional skills in shaping progression through life. Social-emotional skills refer to an umbrella term that comprises a range of competencies, such as; self-regulation, self-concept, motivation, aspiration, and collaboration with others. These skills are important in economic and occupational attainment, health, and well-being. These can be learned and shaped through experience.
In today’s rapidly changing and competitive world, acquiring new knowledge, skills, and abilities for personal development, improving performance, and achieving personal and professional goals becomes crucial. This skill is particularly important in today’s job market, where technology and industries are constantly evolving, and new skills are in high demand. Continuous learning enables individuals to stay current with the latest trends, technologies, and best practices, leading to increased opportunities for advancement and more adaptability to change. It also helps keep the mind active and engaged, which can positively affect overall well-being.
These skills involve the ability to understand and integrate knowledge from multiple disciplines and apply it to solve problems or achieve goals. Interdisciplinary skills allow individuals to see connections and patterns that others may not; and to come up with innovative solutions that consider and integrate multiple perspective for making effective decisions. Having interdisciplinary skills can also make individuals more versatile and able to navigate different fields more easily.
As technology becomes more advanced and integrated into various aspects of society, it is important to ensure that they are developed and used responsibly and ethically. This includes ensuring that they do not perpetuate bias or discrimination, respect privacy, and personal rights, and are transparent and accountable. The ethical implications of decision-making in situations with moral dilemmas, such as prioritizing human lives, need to be considered.
The advancement of AI and ML will not slow down; it will only accelerate. According to Stanford University’s 2019 AI Index Report, the speed of artificial intelligence computation doubles every three months (5). Given that perspective, the field is rapidly evolving, so staying informed and continuously learning skills will be essential in the future competitive environment.
